EMBATTLED President of the Actors
Guild of Nigeria (AGN) Segun Arinze has resigned from office. In a letter dated
May 2, and addressed to the Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT), Prince
Ifeanyi Dike, which was made available to The Guardian, Arinze said following
the recent happenings in the guild, which climaxed with the last botched
elections in Benin.’ He described the April 27 election in Benin City as
‘a sad development for AGN.’ Arinze said: “My tenure as president ended last
year, December 9, but I stayed on in deference to the BoT and the vast majority
of our members who prevailed on me to oversee a successful transition through a
free and fair election.
The events in Benin City are now
a common knowledge. I even constituted an independent electoral committee to
forestall any electoral rancour or external influences. For my integrity and
honour, I hereby resign as president of Actor’s Guild of Nigeria (AGN), and it
comes into effect immediately. I thank the BoT, the state chapter chairmen,
presidents of other guilds in Nollywood, all AGN members and the media for the
tremendous support given to me during my tenure. I also thank my wife, Julie,
for holding on during the challenging period of service to the guild. I wish
the guild the very best as we move forward.’
Before he gave notice of this resignation, Arinze had issued a statement where he apologised for the electoral commission’s inability to conduct the election, which was to hold at Baden Baden Hotel, Benin City.
“To say it was embarrassing, disappointing and a blight on the image of the guild would be an understatement”, Arinze said. He assured that the kind of behaviour showed by some members of the guild, which led to the suspension of the election would not be tolerated, neither should it go unpunished, a reason the leadership of the guild arrived at some resolutions including the dissolution of the Actors Guild Electoral Committee (AGNEC).
The setting up of a three-man panel of inquiry to find out what happened and make recommendations within two weeks and a meeting of all candidates of the botched election, which was scheduled to hold yesterday. The candidates expected include the actress Ibinabo Fiberisima and Steve Eboh (a.k.a Ajebo) who both vied for the position of President.
Arinze, in that statement, also directed all state chapters that have not conducted elections to do so as soon as possible. He also stated that an all-new independent AGNEC would be set up immediately and free from any interference. Arinze stressed his commitment to the emergence of a new leadership for the AGN and further appealed for calm and restraint and assured that the leadership of the guild would do everything humanly possible to resolve all begging issues. But with Arinze’s resignation, the guild has been thrown into further confusion.
Emeka Rollas, the Secretary General, who should have taken charge in the absence of a sitting president, resigned to contest the April 27 election. The guild is now at the mercy of its sit-tight BoT, which has been fingered as responsible for the botched election. Even Arinze was accused of not allowing the electoral committee to be ‘truly independent.’
A member of the electoral committee, Ben Nwosu, lamented their failure to live to expectation because of undue interference by ‘the president and members of the BoT.’ However, a member of the BoT, Emmanuel Ogugua absolved the committee of any blame. He, however, confirmed that BoT has received and accepted Arinze’s resignation.
Ogugua, a former president and founding member of the AGN, disclosed that BoT was already shopping for a caretaker chairman that will oversee the running of the guild for another three months. “We have started talking to some people and should conclude our discussion in a few days. We would shop for and appoint an administrator to run the guild for three months, conduct elections and hand over power. We are taking our time and carefully not to appoint anyone that will become power drunk and would not want to vacate office”, Ogugua said
Thousands of years after the first athletes competed at the ancient
stadium in Greece, a high priestess swathed in white lit a flame from
the sun to mark the start of a new Olympiad on Thursday.
The Olympics are as much
about tradition and legacy as they are sporting events, with none so
vivid as the lighting of the torch which will now wind its way from
Olympia to the Games in London.
The solemn ceremony, held
in the ruins of the 2,600-year-old Temple of Hera, saw actors in
ancient Greek costume use a mirror to harness the sun's rays and light
the Olympic torch.
It marks the start of the
flame's week-long journey to Britain, where it will begin an 8,000-mile
(12,875-kilometer) route across the country before entering at the new
stadium in east London.
Taking center stage in the lighting ceremony was
Greek actress Ino Menegaki as the traditional high priestess. Among the
dignitaries present were International Olympic Committee president Jacques
Rogge and London organizing committee chairman Sebastian Coe.
The first relay runner to take the flame was
Greece's Liverpool-born open water swimming champion Spyros Gianniotis.
He then passed it to 19-year-old British boxer
Alexander Loukos, who grew up in east London where the Olympic Stadium is now
situated, but whose father hails from Greece.
Making its way to Britain, the flame will first take
in Greek archaeological sites including the Acropolis and Olympic Stadium in
Athens, site of the first modern Games in 1896.
Arriving on May 19 at Land's End in the far
southwest of England, it will then wind its way through 1,019 communities,
carried by 8,000 torch-bearers.
The final leg will run from Hampton Court Palace,
the former home of King Henry VIII, before arriving at the opening ceremony on
July 27.
The lady, who’s spending the rest of her life with star actor,Chidi Mokeme is Dr. Jean Chinwe Olumba.
They first met at President Barack Obama’s inauguration ball in Maryland,USA in 2008.
Chidi Mokeme and Jean have been enjoying a sizzling romance since then(the star actor actually proposed last year).
From Mbieri,Imo State,she was 38(on Friday,April 27,2012,while Chidi was 40,on March 17,2012).
She was born and bred in the United States of America, where she still lives with her parents and siblings.
Her dad,now retired has relocated home while her mum would be shuttling between Nigeria and Obama’s land to attend to the family’s interests.
Chidi Mokeme’s wife has a doctorate in a specialized area of Medicine and a PhD in Pharmacy.
The fifth in a family of 6 children(3boys and 3 girls),Jean is dark, lanky, tall and beautiful. She comes across a simple and easy going lady.
And being highly educated, she measures her speech, colouring it with modesty and wishing not to be quoted for now.
Jean, however, let out few words about her love story and great expectations from the marital union that was solemnized on Saturday,April 28,2012.
We didn’t start out like he asked me out.It happened honestly by chance and I still wonder how I got in (General laughter).
I didn’t know he was a movie star when I met him at President Obama’s inauguration party in Maryland,USA.
I did not know he was this popular.Unfortunately,at that time,I didn’t watch Nigerian movies,so I didn’t know about him.
The only question I asked him that day was,you just walked in here and everybody in the room was saying hello,do you know all these people? And he said no.And I said,so,how come they know you?He said well,by virtue of what I do.
I said what is it that you do?He said Nollywood. And my next question was what is that?(Laughs). He started laughing.
Everyone else in the room was laughing too,so I had to now go look at what is Nollywood.
All of this publicity, and the fans, his crown, his level of accomplishments in Nollywood,at first,I didn’t know.I didn’t expect it.I saw it as a nuisance initially, but I guess with time I will get used to it.
When asked,so,how do you intend to cope with women, the fans and everybody trying to get a piece of him(Chidi);she said
Well, you always have to give to Ceaser what belongs to Ceaser and give to God what belongs to God.
I realized that with Chidi’s line of work, his fans are always going to be there.
He will always have to have friends and fans. And the Chidi that I met was simply Chidi.I didn’t meet GQ,the Nollywood actor(Laughter). So,that aspect of him is a new discovery.
The person that I met was simply Chidi. So,that’s the part of him that I will keep and I will let everyone else keep the GQ.
On whether I will relocate to Nigeria,I sincerely want to be with Chidi.Of course,we will both decide that.
It’s not an overnight decision. We have to harmonise things

News getting to my desk this wonderful morning is that our sultry
actress, Ini Edo has been sent on a nine month course by her husband
(hopefully) - Ini Edo has been pregnant for a while now and the
ultrascan reveals that she is expecting a bouncing baby boy anytime
soon.
Ini, who got married at a tradtional wedding in Eket, Akwa Ibom State and later a white wedding in Houston, Texas in 2009 is one of Nigeria’s most talked about actresses. She also belong to the A-list league in nollywood. She is a glo ambassador and recently, she became a producer with support of Emem Isong and others.

Another new fight has been added to the already many dirty fights in Nollywood between actresses.
Over the years, Nollywood actresses have had bitter fights between each other over various causes ranging from men, ego, intimidation, etc.
The latest in that line of hot fight, which may explode if care is not taken is between controversy-happy actress, Tonto Dikeh and new-entrant in controversy business, Susan Peters.
According to the latest development of which the genesis of is still very cloudy, both Tonto and Susan Peters made their fight public.
Susan Peters talked about her anger to Tonto when she said, “I don’t have a short temper, I just have a quick reaction too. Bullsh*t.”
In a quick response to Susan Peters, Tonto said, “next time, I will snap all ma [BB] Porsche phones and send to you. That would be super cool. I will look for a new way to irritate you baby.”
The question now is, what could have made Tonto Dikeh be sarcastic in her response to Susan Peters? What could have caused the fight between Tonto and Susan Peters?

In what appears like a recurrent cycle of shame, the men of Nigeria
Immigration Services have foiled an attempt to export five Edo girls
into slavery. The five teenagers and one boy were intercepted with a
suspected human trafficker, simply identified as Stella Daniel, from
Cross River State at Seme border as they were trying to enter
neighbouring Republic of Benin enroute war-torn Republic of Mali.
The girls, Blessing, Abigael , Ella Ojo, Faith and Isabella and Lucky, the only boy, (other names withheld) had quietly absconded with Daniel to chase the proverbial Golden Fleece in Mali. They all claimed ignorance of the civil war in the country of their destination. For them, the attraction to work in a bar abroad was too tempting to ignore.
The promise of N30,000CFA, equivalent of N10,000 monthly, was more than enough consideration to ‘escape’ from the allure of love and care of their parents. They confessed to have sworn to on oath with their madam not to run away until they have fully refunded her through services to customers. However, the alertness of the eagle eyes men of Nigeria Immigration Service at the border post saved them from what appears like exportation into sex slavery in foreign land.
According to the Comproller of Immigration Services (CIS) at the border, Julius Ogbu, who explained the circumstances of the arrest of the girls and their madam to Crimewatch, the appearance of a woman and young girls of college age almost in the same age bracket aroused the suspicion of the officers. The suspicion of the officers was confirmed, when, upon interrogation, none of them had any traveling document while their destination also raised more curiosity.
“They said that were going to work in a restaurant for the trafficker. She said she recruited them from Nigeria. Incidentally, neither the trafficker nor any of the girls had traveling documents.“More curious was the fact that none of their parents was aware they were traveling outside the country. That was why we had to detain them and conducted further interrogation. By the time we put our facts together, we came to a conclusion that it was actually a case of human trafficking. Number one, no traveling document; number two, their parents and relatives were not aware that they were leaving the shore of this country.
“And their age is between 18 and 20. Only one of them is 22. That is the age they gave us in our records. They all claimed they were from Edo State. “By virtue of our training: you are trained to be a border patrol officer and patrol prepares you for jobs in mega routes while control officers are those you see in the main borders. You’re also trained to be very vigilant so that any movement that is suspicious, you apprehend, and interrogate and then you refer.
“At the end of the day, you come into a conclusion. So, on this night when they came out of the bus, it aroused the suspicion of our men. The driver and the bus are still being detained because we have not been able to ascertain if they are culpable or not. We want to know if they boarded the vehicle as just routing passengers or not. The National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffic in Persons (NAPTIP), the agency responsible for cases of human trafficking will be able to give their verdict along that line after we have handed them over to them.
“We always warn the transporters to be careful of strange movements. If you have five young girls, traveling with a woman and you could easily infer they are not her children, then you should be suspicious. Ours is to apprehend and hand the suspects to NAPTIP. By the time they conclude their investigation they will assist those girls to re-unite with their families while the trafficker will face prosecution,” he said.
While our reporter was still at the border with the officers, mother of one of the girls, Mrs Oforue Imagbosoria, came in tears all the way Edo from Benin State, in search of her daughter, who she claimed had disappeared since penultimate Sunday. She said her daughter called her on GSM and apologised for her conduct.
Her words: “My daughter just called me yesterday and informed me that she had been arrested. She just called me and said, ‘Mummy, I beg you to forgive me; they don catch me for road.’ I asked her, where you dey go my pikin? She said she dey Lagos. She said it was a woman from Cross River State that carried her to swear juju because she wanted to carry her travel abroad.
She explained that her daughter disclosed that she and her friends were at Seme border. “So, that was how I came from Benin,” she stressed. According to her, Abigael’s action was very strange because she had been well catered for by her parents.
“We made sure she does not lack anything. She said it was her friends that introduced her to the woman,” she said.
The alleged trafficker in a chat with our reporter, however, insisted that the decision to take the girls to the foreign country was motivated by compassion and pity. “Although I needed one girl and one boy to work in my restaurant and bar in Mali, I decided to take others along out of pity and from what they told me,” she said.
Madam Daniel, who claimed to have spent three and half years in Mali where she has a boyfriend, who she has a daughter for, said she planned to accommodate the girls in her apartment and that she promised to pay them N10,000 each every months as remuneration.
She confessed that she did not obtain any document to facilitate their traveling since the route is familiar to her. “I myself, I don’t have any paper because I do not know that I need to collect papers to travel,” she said.
She spoke on how she recruited the girls: “When I came for Easter, I told them where I was staying in Benin that I needed one boy and one girl to take along with me when I’m returning to Mali. My plan was that the boy would be operating the bar while the girl would take care of the restaurant.
So, they brought a girl and a boy to me.
“However, others started coming and said they must follow me. One of them said she was an orphan, two others joined us and started crying that they had nobody to support them. I told them, I didn’t have enough money but they were crying. So, I decided to help them. This one (pointing to one of the girls) came on Sunday morning, the day we wanted to leave Benin. She was crying.
She said she must follow us. I told her that I didn’t have enough money to take us to Mali but if we get to Cotonou, I could make phone call so that they would send money to us. I asked her to go and bring her parents because I could not take anybody away without the consent of her parents, who must also stand as surety. The one that said she didn’t have parents, I asked her to bring her sisters or any close relation.
“Now, in the morning we found this one (Abigael) waiting outside, crying that she must follow us. When I asked her to go and bring her parents, she said no. That was how they started crying. They said that life is tough for them because they don’t have any care from their parents.
It was the way they explained their plight to me that made me to accept them.”
